A medical doctor, Dr Agostino Miozzo is the Managing Director of the Crisis Response Department in the European External Action Service (EEAS) (2010-present).

Previously, he was General Director in the Italian Civil Protection Department (2002-2010), responsible, among other tasks, for emergency operations carried out abroad. In particular, he has coordinated relief programs in Sri Lanka, South Sudan, Iran, Indonesia, Algeria, Morocco, Ossetia, Lebanon, and the United States. Dr Agostino Miozzo was Coordinator of Emergency Relief Operations at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991-2001). During this period he was involved in emergency relief programs throughout the world, particularly in the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, America and Asia. He has also worked as a voluntary Doctor in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia (1982-1985).

Dr Miozzo has written and contributed to several scientific publications and regularly lectures at universities and research institutes. In 2008 he was awarded a Gold Merit Medal for his contribution to the Public Health Service.
