Discourse Analysis Applied to the Arab Springs

The objective of the course is to give students tools and elements of discourse analysis which can be applied by students working on or having interests in the Arab Springs and their internal or external actors.
The course is divided in three parts: during the first part, the students will be taught briefly about the main concepts of discourse analysis and, mainly, two particular methods of discourse analysis will be explained in details (one type of “framing” analysis and one type of “critical discourse analysis”). During the second part of the course, both methods will be applied to various media dealing with the Arab Springs in order to analyze how and why discourses differ. Finally, the last part of the course will be devoted to a practical exercise in which students will proceed themselves to an analysis of the discourse of various internal and external actors of the Arab Springs.
